Cities and Regions in Transition: Accentuating Assets, and Repositioning Economies for a More Prosperous Future

Speakers: Dane Walling, Mayor, City of Flint, MI; Benjamin Kennedy, Community Development Program Officer, Kresge Foundation; India Lee Pierce, Program Director for Neighborhoods, Cleveland Foundation; Tamar Shapiro, Director of Urban and Regional Policy, German Marshall Fund

Older industrial cities, both small and large, have been particular hard-hit by the recession. Building on regional assets, public-private partnerships and new funding opportunities, several such cities are transforming their economies for a stronger future. Philanthropic institutions have played a significant role in the transformation of these cities. Cleveland’s University Circle and Detroit’s Midtown are leading examples of new economic opportunities built around anchor institutions that are replacing older industrial and manufacturing centers. Flint, MI, with strong support from the local philanthropic community, is updating its master plan and zoning code to reflect current realities and reposition itself for a better and more sustainable future. The speakers address such topics as the role of anchor institutions in reviving local economies, worker-owned cooperatives, and neighborhood-based strategies that address widespread vacancy and abandonment.

Living in a Sustainable Community Can Lengthen Your Life!

Speakers: Dan Burden, Executive Director, Walkable and Livable Communities Institute; Joel Spoonheim, President, Spoonheim Group; Laura Jackson, Executive Vice President, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield; Kent Sovern, Iowa State Director, AARP. Moderator: Amy Levner, Manager, Livable Communities, AARP

Can a community transform itself in two years to reverse negative health outcomes, by changing city policies and budgets, restaurant menus, worksite wellness practices, schools, and even individuals’ sense of purpose and social circles? Yes! Already seven communities across the United States are implementing the Blue Zones Project by Healthways. In a matter of months, not years, thousands of citizens and leaders across all sectors get involved making healthy choices easy choices. This approach is based on the lessons of the longest living communities in the world, called Blue Zones areas. Ten well-coordinated and research-backed strategies can lead to measurable improvements in wellbeing and longevity. The recommended practices include adopting Complete Streets policies and projects, creating safe routes to schools and walking schools buses, and other efforts to change the environment. The work started in 2009 with the AARP/Blue Zones Project and now is scaling to serve communities across the U.S.

Global Blood Safety, Optimizing Treatment and the Affordability of Care

Speakers: Brian O’Mahony, Mark W. Skinner

Over the next few years, we will see a revolution in treatment not seen since the 1960s. Treatment products will advance on all fronts, from viral-inactivated (solvent detergent) cryoprecipitate, biosimilars of current therapies and treatment products with substantially enhanced efficacy to the increasing likelihood that through gene transfer a “cure” may become a reality. The blood safety concerns of the past have been replaced by current concerns about maintaining vigilance against such blood-borne agents as viruses and prions. Equally important are the challenges of adequate factor supply and access to products around the world. This session describes how patients have started to join forces to bring all key stakeholders together to ensure that the views of product users are considered when it comes to access to these vital therapies. During this session we also address the challenges of answering US government and payer demands for evidence-based medicine, and cost justification for the introduction of new therapies and enhancement of current treatments.

Meet-the-Author: Dr. Phillip M. Bromberg

Speakers: Melinda Gellman, Philip M. Bromberg, Christine C. Kieffer

Deepening his inquiry into the nature of what is therapeutic about the psychoanalytic relationship Dr. Bromberg explores the two interlocking rewards of successful treatment — healing and growth. By being an affectively alive partner who is simultaneously attentive to the dissociated impact of his own enacted participation, the analyst helps decrease the patient’s mistrust of potentially traumatizing “otherness” and its dissociated dread of attachment rupture. This in turn leads to both greater confidence in relational affect regulation and a growing ability to safely contain the self-state negotiation of otherness inherent to the experience of internal conflict. In its essence, Bromberg’s portrayal of therapeutic action restores self-state fluidity, liberating the patient’s capacity for trust without vigilance and permitting life to be lived with greater creativity, love and spontaneity.

Symposium I: Embodiment & Subjectivity

Speakers: Andrea Celenza, John C. Foehl, Jessica Benjamin

This symposium addresses the role of the body through phenomenal experiencing, i.e., embodiment, as conceptualized by philosophical writers and contemporary relational theorists (especially from the perspective of intersubjectivity). Presymbolic, unmentalized bodily experience provides a ground of skin-contact and rhythmicity from which the capacities of differentiating and integrating experiences arise, especially as these are organized around a variety of binaries: inner/outer, self/other and female/male. Psychopathology is understood as a collapse of dialectical interplay, causing disruptions in early patterns of interpersonal recognition, flexibility and play. Presenters discuss how transcending binarial constraints can result in greater creativity and overall well-being.

Panel IV: Mourning, Identity, Creativity

Speakers: Adele Tutter, Otto F. Kernberg, Anna Ornstein, Leon Wurmser, Jeanine M. Vivona, Tehela Nimroody

Having come a long way from Freud’s circumscribed process of libidinal detachment, mourning is now considered a potentially life-long process that includes not only the grieving of loved ones, but also the grieving of developmental stages (e.g., childhood) and components of identity (e.g., ideals and illusions). At the same time, mourning is increasingly appreciated as a powerful inaugurator of personal growth and creative and vocational productivity. This panel brings together leading thinkers who have made important recent contributions to this topic. Through interactive dialogue with the discussant and the audience, they attempt a fresh synthesis of the complex, universal, and transformative processes of mourning. This panel was originally proposed by Adele Tutter, M.D., Ph.D.
