Scientific Paper 3: Edith Wharton’s Two Worlds: Overcoming Phobia & Sexual Problems

Speakers: Deanna Holtzman, Nancy Kulish

Edith Wharton, the pre-eminent American writer, left a great deal of autobiographical material, letters, diaries, plus, of course, a vast collection of literary fiction and non-fiction. A fascinating theme runs through much of her work — that of living or being trapped between “two worlds.” This theme is critical to understanding Wharton’s psychology and the psychology of women in general. The authors will examine an unusual neurotic phobia suffered by Wharton as it is related to the theme of two worlds, and link these ideas more broadly to common sexual conflicts in women.

Weighty Matters: Overweight with a Bleeding Disorder? Why It Matters and What We Can Do About It

Speakers: Ruth Mulvany, DPT, MS, PT

This session reviews current research on prevalence and impact of overweight conditions in patients with bleeding disorders. We analyze the biomechanical stress of weight loading on joints and multiple body systems, and will review how being overweight adversely affects people with bleeding disorders even more than the average population. Examples of calculations for biomechanical stress are given. Research on weight-loss strategies will be reviewed and participants will develop at least one strategy for counseling/patient education, safe exercise for fitness, wellness and weight loss, motivation and promotion of self-management.

Innovative Municipal approaches to Equitable Reinvestment and Revitalization

Speakers: Jeff Hebert, Executive Director, New Orleans Redevelopment Authority; Michael Braverman, JD, Deputy Commissioner, Housing Authority of Baltimore City, MD. Moderator: Nicole Heyman, JD, LLM, Vice President and Director of New Orleans Vacant Properties Initiative, Center for Community Progress.

Code enforcement, nuisance abatement and the legal systems they work within directly impact the quality of life, reinvestment opportunities and long-term sustainability and affordability of neighborhoods. At its core, the goal of a code enforcement program is to encourage responsible property ownership. Code enforcement is property regulatory system and that helps prevent vacancy, abandonment and disinvestment. As communities seek to protect neighborhoods and individuals from the negative impacts of substandard or vacant properties and negligent landowners and landlords – problems often disproportionately affecting communities of color and low-income residents – it’s more important than ever to create strategic approaches and partnerships to achieve positive and equitable outcomes. This interactive discussion among some of the country’s most thoughtful and innovative problem-solvers explores how code enforcement departments, the courts and redevelopment authorities are working together to hold negligent property owners accountable, eliminate blight, and drive development opportunities in disinvested neighborhoods.

Transit Justice Organizing (Intro to Regional Planning II - Transportation)

Speakers: Bob Allen, Urban Habitat; Margaret Gordon, West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP) and Ditching Dirty Diesel (DDD); Mary Lim Lampe, Genesis; Jane Martin, People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER); Guillermo Mayer, Public Advocates; Alia Phelps, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE)

The region's decisions about transit funding have long prioritized the needs of big business and invested heavily in highways in wealthy suburbs, but low-income transit dependent riders are pushing back against this paradigm by organizing for more affordable transit and better transit service in their communities. This workshop will share lessons learned from two case studies: the 6 Wins network's advocacy for equity within Plan Bay Area and the free youth transit pass victory in San Francisco. We will explore how we can better coordinate throughout the region to support each other and share organizing efforts that are underway.
