Scientific Paper 1: The Psychoanalyst and the Clinic: A Balint Group for Psychiatrists

Speakers: Jonathan Sklar; Norman V. Kohn

The paper offers an original description of Balint Group methodology and its relevance for training psychiatrists. Central is the understanding that the psychiatrist presents his clinical problem with the patient. Making the doctor’s counter-transference central to the process moves it away from being supervision i.e., the technical acquisition of skills. This is key for Balint, for whom acquiring psychodynamics “entails a limited, though considerable change in the doctor’s personality.” This paper is a tribute to developing Balint’s ideas and offering graphic vignettes of the difficulty and value of working with psychiatrists in this way. The author is a Training and Supervising analyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society.

From Temporary to Sustainable Paradise: "Smart Growth Catalysts" and The Battle for Planning in the San Diego/Tijuana Region

Speakers: Dahvia Lynch, AICP, Project Manager, Department of General Services, San Diego County; Bruce Appleyard, PhD, Associate Research Professor, University of Utah; Michael Stepner FAIA, FAICP, New School of Architecture and Design; Carlos Graizbord, Former Director of IMPlan, Professor of Urban Planning, Universidad Iberoamericana; Brian Mooney, AICP, Principal, Mooney Planning Collaborative

The panel explores the Roles NGO's can play as "Smart Growth Catalysts" in assisting local government in developing public policy for long range planning. As a framework, the panel will build upon the historic 1974 bi-national urban design plan for the San Diego/Tijuana Region, "Temporary Paradise?" by Kevin Lynch and Donald Appleyard, father of Dr. Bruce Appleyard. The C-3 plan goes beyond traditional planning programs that are limited by jurisdiction and integrates both sides of the US/Mexican Border to address sustainability issues for the environment, economics, land use, social equity, and life systems. The ultimate goal is to assist the region in the implementation of plans and programs that not only preserve and enhance the unique San Diego/Tijuana environment but build on its multi-cultural and education assets.

Educators Symposium: Executive Function Disorders and Disorders of the Self: Exploring No Man’s Land

Speakers: Tillie C. Garfinkel, M.Ed (Silver Spring, MD); Joseph Palombo, MA (Chicago, IL); Stephen D. Kerzner, MD (Duxbury, MA); Tillie C. Garfinkel, M.Ed. (Silver Spring, MD); Stephen D. Kerzner, MD (Duxbury, MA)

This symposium is geared to APsaA Educator Associates, K-12 educators, psychoanalysts, and mental health professionals. Executive functioning disorders are brain based dysfunctions involving neuropsychological deficits, often producing deficits in the sense of self. A complex relationship exists between executive functions and ADHD. The integration of neuropsychological and psychodynamic factors requires a new paradigm incorporating neuropsychological, relational, and intra-psychic dimensions. This session explores implications of this new paradigm. Joseph Palombo is a clinical social worker, and founding Dean, Institute for Clinical Social Work, and faculty Rush Neurobehavioral Center and affiliated with Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. Stephen Kerzner, psychoanalyst and school consultant, provides a psychoanalytic perspective.

Speakers: Chair & Moderator: Daria Colombo, M.D. (New York, NY) Presenter: Siri Hustvedt, Ph.D.* (Brooklyn, NY)

“The Shaking Woman - Or, A History of My Nerves,” is a riveting personal account of her experience as a patient, and of the neurological, philosophical, and psychoanalytic ambiguities of her diagnosis.
