Emerging Monitoring and Evaluation Approaches for Climate Adaptation
Speakers: Timothy Burroughs, Climate Action Coordinator, City of Berkeley; Matt Hennigan, Energy Efficiency Engineer, City of Santa Monica; Cyndy Comerford, Manager of Planning and Fiscal Policy, San Francisco Department of Public Health; MODERATOR: Kristin Brubaker, Project Manager, Local Government Commission
Do you know if your adaptation planning and implementation efforts are working? Are they achieving desired outcomes? While some local governments and regions in California are leading the way on climate-adaptation planning and implementation efforts, many communities still struggle with how best to monitor and evaluate these efforts. This session addresses this emerging area of climate adaptation, highlighting communities on the frontline of monitoring and evaluation activities. Panelists from Berkeley, Santa Monica, and San Francisco share their experiences, including their successes, challenges and lessons learned. The session features a discussion about the most effective ways to structure adaptation monitoring and evaluation efforts; opportunities to leverage existing mechanisms; how to communicate results and information with stakeholders; and resources and templates that can be used to support monitoring and evaluation.

Labor Unions: Emerging Allies for Smart Growth
Speakers: Greg LeRoy, Executive Director, Good Jobs First; Kevin Pranis, Laborers International Union of North America; Aurita Apodaca, Organizer, FRESC for Good Jobs and Strong Communities; Lorena Gonzalez, Secretary/Treasurer/CEO, San Diego-Imperial Counties Central Labor Council
Some unions, like the Food & Commercial Workers who oppose Walmart and the Amalgamated Transit Union that advocates for transit, are well-known to smart growthers for their sophisticated advocacy. And unions have much more freedom to advocate than do non-profits or most public officials. But too often, labor leaders and growth-management practitioners do not know each other well or actively coordinate. This workshop is both "Labor's Self-Interest in Smart Growth" and "Labor Movement 101" with specific examples of smart growth advocacy from three exemplary labor groups and a pro-labor think tank.

Symposium II: The Politics of Psychoanalytic Lexicography: Psychoanalytic Terms & Concepts
Speakers: Elizabeth Auchincloss, Eslee Samberg
Drs. Elizabeth Auchincloss and Eslee Samberg, co-editors-in-chief of “Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts,” a volume co-published by Yale University Press and the American Psychoanalytic Association, present the challenges encountered in editing a psychoanalytic dictionary in this age of theoretical pluralism and postmodern challenges to “authority.” The editors describe the strategies they employed in their management of “point of view” and give specific examples to illustrate the political issues they negotiated in defi ning terms and concepts. They also place their project in context by describing the political issues that have shaped the history of psychoanalytic lexicography from its beginnings.

Symposium II: Poetry and Psychoanalysis
Speakers: Moderator: Carol Snow (San Francisco, CA) Presenters: Forrest Hamer, Ph.D. (Oakland, CA) Susan Kolodny, D.M.H. (Oakland, CA)
This symposium will be a moderated conversation between three analyst-poets and a poet “interviewer” reflecting on the relationship between psychoanalysis and poetry. Listening, embodied experience, time, language, inspiration, blocks to (and supports of) creative expression all will be considered. The three will discuss the process of making poems, their own paths to writing poetry, as well as the relationship of poetry to psychoanalysis. The two psychoanalyst-poets are Forrest Hamer, Ph.D. and Susan Kolodny, D.M.H. The interviewing poet is Carol Snow who is an esteemed poet and not a psychoanalyst.

Advances in GIS for Smart Growth — Horizontal and Vertical
Speakers: Jon Harrison, Senior Consultant for Local Government Solutions, ESRI; Councilmember, City of Redlands, CA; Matthew Baker, Product Engineer, ESRI; Eric Wittner, 3D GIS Specialist, ESRI
Whether it’s appealing, vibrant infill and retail revitalization, complete streets and public spaces, traffic calming, or a more extensive network of safe bike routes and pedestrian trails – using GIS in 2D and 3D can make a difference. Like the broader toolbox of smart-growth concepts and strategies, the techniques and capabilities of GIS are advancing and emerging. GIS can intertwine complex details of demographic, geographic and urban design factors that communities can use to easily analyze and visualize the implications of alternative development scenarios. With GIS we can 'see' what and how possible solutions work.
