Professional Development Workshop 1 – Guidelines for Engaging with the Media
Speakers: William H. Braun, Geralyn Leaderman, Gail Saltz MD
Mental health professionals are sought after by members of the media seeking background information or quotes for their stories. Engaging with the media offers analysts the opportunity to lend a news story a psychoanalytic perspective, leading to a greater understanding of psychoanalysis among members of the public. This workshop addresses how to give an interview for print, television and radio, what to keep in mind when speaking to reporters and tips for staying on message. We also discuss writing successful opinion pieces and letters-to-the-editor.

Presidential Symposium: Minding the Markets: How Psychoanalysis Can Help to Build New Economics and Finance Thinking
Speakers: Robert A. Johnson, MA, PhD (Exec Director of the Institute of New Economic Thinking); Professor David Tuckett (London, England); Warren R. Procci, MD, President (Pasadena, CA)
APsaA’s international colleague, David Tuckett, has sought to contribute to the development of a new field of “emotional finance” with a specific interest in understanding the recent and continuing financial crisis. Human emotion has a critical impact on financial markets and, until very recently, economic theories have failed to take this into account. At the heart of the worst financial crisis in decades is a failure to organize markets in a way that puts controls on the very human emotion and behavior which trading unleashes. Robert Johnson and David Tuckett each speak on this subject and then lead a discussion concerning how psychological and psychoanalytic concepts can offer considerable assistance in understanding the sometimes irrational behavior of people and markets.

Back to Planning School: What You Need to Know for Successful and Collaborative School Siting
Speakers: Fred Yeager, Assistant Director, California Department of Education, School Facilities Planning Division; Jeff Vincent, PhD, Deputy Director, Center for Cities and Schools, University of California, Berkeley; Cynthia Bryant, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, California Charter Schools Association; Chris Grimes, Director of Facilities Development, Roseville Joint Union High School District
Strategically locating new schools and revitalizing existing schools with consideration of other public services is an important part of achieving regional environmental goals, increasing service levels to students and the community, and leveraging funding opportunities. Yet, the relationship between school districts, land developers, and cities or counties can be tense, particularly where there is little or no coordination during planning processes. This workshop highlights the guiding principles and standards for locating schools and how these standards can support many of the common goals shared by school districts and local governments.
